free wordpress themesIt’s been two weeks since The Copy Box changed format from a static website to a Wordpress blog, and the results have been encouraging. Not only are we enjoying working with the new site, but pages seem to be getting indexed very quickly by Google and we’ve had scores of new people sign up to our mailing list – which bodes very well for the future.

My own personal conclusion is that Wordpress is definitely the way forward for everything from personal blogs to corporate websites. The system is so flexible and powerful that even a novice can use it, while experts can achieve some truly great results building their own templates and plugins etc.

To celebrate my new found love of all things Wordpress, I’ve put together this collection of resources highlighting some of the fantastic free themes that are available for the platform. These aren’t clunky CMS templates, but well designed and highly configurable themes that will enhance your online presence.

Before you ask, none of these resources are affiliate links:

  1. Smashing Magazine’s theme collection is awesome, there’s something for everyone here: Smashing Magazine
  2. I can’t really pronounce the name of this site, but they’ve got some great themes (in three sections): Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3
  3. The folks at Top Wordpress Themes have a nice selection: TopWPThemes
  4. If you want your site to be flexible and very user friendly, try this: Copyblogger Theme
  5. Are these the best damn themes on the planet?: Pearsonified
  6. Some of these themes are free, some of them aren’t – but they’re all excellent: Brian Gardner
  7. Ok, so these aren’t completely free, but it’s not expensive to access some great themes: WPdesigner
  8. This site has a good mix of both free and premium themes, check them out: Blog Oh Blog
  9. This is a great free resource, more themes than you can shake a stick at: BestWPThemes
  10. To finish off, how about this impressive collection, there’s hundreds of ‘em: Osskins

If you can’t find a Wordpress theme you like amongst this lot, and you really, really must have a unique one, my advice is to go onto Elance and advertise for a theme developer to build one for you. Alternatively, if you’re really brave, you could try to build a Wordpress theme yourself.
